Higher Toll Rates Approved For CAVITEX and NLEX

Motorists using the Cavite Expressway (CAVITEX) and North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) now have to pay more for their toll fees. The Toll Regulatory Board (TRB) has approved an increase in the rates and has taken effect on May 12.

Continue reading and find out the new rates of NLEX and CAVITEX this 2022.

Why Are Toll Roads Important?

Toll gates are barriers placed across roads and highways that collect fees from motorists in exchange for passage. In the Philippines, there are several major toll roads, such as the Cavite Expressway (CAVITEX) and the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX). These two highways are some of the busiest in the country, and they connect Metro Manila to important industrial areas like Cavite and Central Luzon.

The price hike for the CAVITEX and NLEX may have a significant impact on the prices of goods, as transportation cost is expected to go up. This is especially true for essential goods coming from Central and Northern Luzon. Toll gates are important because they provide a revenue stream for the maintenance and upkeep of highways. Without tolls, these roads would quickly fall into disrepair, making them dangerous and unusable.

The Toll Regulatory Board is a Philippine government body that controls all toll roads throughout the country. The Philippine Toll Regulatory Board (TRB) is the regulatory body of all tolled roads in the Philippines, with legal authority over all toll facilities. The Republic of the Philippines’ charter permits it to negotiate contracts on behalf of the country with qualified persons, natural or juridical, for the construction, operation, and maintenance of toll facilities.

NLEX Price Hike

Users of NLEX from Balintawak, Caloocan City, to Marilao, Bulacan, will now be charged these extra fees: an extra 2 PHP for Class 1 vehicles, 6 PHP for Class 2, and 8 PHP for Class 3. On the open system, Class 1 would cost 62 PHP, Class 2 ticket would be 155 PHP, and Class 3 would cost 179 PHP.

CAVITEX Price Hike

Users of Cavitex are also expected to pay a higher toll rate for the 6.48-kilometer R-1 Expressway portion from Longos, Bacoor, to MIA Exit. The new toll rate for Class 1 vehicles is 33 PHP, Class 2 vehicles 67 PHP, and Class 3 vehicles 100 PHP. This is in contrast to the previous toll rates of 25 PHP, 50 PHP, and 75 PHP, respectively.

Importance of Toll Roads

Toll roads are essential for the growth of an economy. That is why the government’s Build, Build, Build infrastructure program is so important. Toll roads not only speed up travel and the movement of goods, but they also help to relieve traffic congestion. Reduced travel time, in turn, increases economic productivity and has a significant non-fiscal incentive for potential investors.

In the Philippines, as in many other parts of Asia and Europe, toll roads are having an impact on the economy. The provision of seamless travel across these toll roads will have a long-term beneficial impact on the economies outside of the capital region.
