Promoting Sustainability in Logistics

There is a widespread call to adapt sustainability in logistics and promote greener practices across all functions of the company. Logistics and supply chain functions will be a big contributor to this move in lowering ecological footprints in the world.

From a logistics perspective, the most important aspect to take into account is adapting to strategies that will reduce emissions, noise pollution, and accidents. Logistics suppliers and leading companies must be able to balance this initiative of helping the environment, the society and achieving growth in the financials of the company. The application of sustainability in logistics does not only cover reduction of harmful greenhouse gas emissions but also helps in lowering the costs of a company’s operations.

Leading logistics companies in the world have started to adapt sustainability in logistics. It is a great challenge for the company but will ultimately provide a greater benefit for the society. Many countries have become more strict in environmental regulations that companies must adhere to. For instance, trucking companies have started to switch to fuel efficient vehicles that have lower carbon footprints compared to older vehicles. Modern logistics companies are also using technology to achieve sustainability. Majority of providers have switched to paperless transactions and moved to using different platforms in processing delivery requests.

Sustainability in logistics may also be achieved through renewable energy. Logistics companies can apply usage of wind and solar power in their operations. By embracing this option, it will help the company reduce carbon emissions and transport costs.

Implementation of the 4R strategy (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Recover) also brings down unnecessary wastes and the squandering of resources.

Companies should avoid using logistics services that do not adhere to environmentally sound projects. Many companies nowadays are already accomplishing meaningful projects to reduce emissions and wastes in their production and operations. The path towards sustainability in logistics is a joint effort between many people and organizations. It requires collective ideas and strategies that will bring a significant change to our environment.
